An extensive recycling program, a variety of energy reduction control systems and a concerted effort to use recycled paper are a just a few of the reasons why Casey Printing continues to be recognized by the County Of Monterey as a responsible green business.

In August, 2008 Casey Printing became the first business in southern Monterey County to be certified “Green” by the Monterey Bay Area Green Business program. As a part of this certification, program auditors followed a strict set of criteria, closely examining all production and business practices.

On February 23, 2010, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, in a special presentation at County Government Center, recognized certified members of the Green Business Program for their ongoing efforts to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. Chairman of the Board, Supervisor Simon Salinas, said this about the occasion: “The Board of Supervisors is proud of the voluntary nature of this program. We are happy to see that Casey Printing is committed to both sustainability and profitability. They are a great example of the kind of green business our county wants and needs.”

That, coupled with the ongoing recession, results in some very hungry folks. Using the Super Bowl as a rallying point to focus on hunger, Casey Printing, along with thousands of youth organizations, businesses and churches all over the nation, participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring project. This incredibly helpful and meaningful event encourages people to donate soup or other non-perishable food items to their local food pantry around the time of the Super Bowl.

Now that we are sure this internet thing is not just a passing fad, we are setting our pet rocks aside and focusing on increasing our services. While print remains the single, most effective way to drive your message to a reader, when coupled with the dynamics of the internet, it enhances the power of the message. A survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Earthtone suggests that most people choose how they consume media based on personal preferences.

Research shows that the majority of adults in the U.S. think that printed media are easier to read than the digital equivalent. Interestingly, most adults reported that they feel more comfortable when they have something on paper than when it’s on screen, suggesting that we make an instinctive association between things we can touch and feel and things that are “real.” At the same time, many adults also showed a preference for the immediacy that digital media offers. We value real time information from around the world, finding the music we love in seconds, and the low cost of Web-based communications.

Recently adding website design, email marketing products and digital editions of print publications, we are offering a more comprehensive solution for publishers. “Our job is to help our customers get their message into the minds of their readers,” explained Rich Casey, while describing the company’s strategies to offer more ways to deliver information. In light of this, Casey continues to develop services to multiply the power of print.
According to Plant Engineer, Fidencio “Fifi” Diaz, the new system will provide the plant with very high quality, clean & dry, compressed air while using 40% less energy than the older technology compressor system it replaced.

Other “Green” benefits of the new system are the particulate filters and waters traps that are “closed loop” so that zero oil emissions are let into the environment. In addition, along with the new compressor system, a new high tech air dryer was installed that requires less than half the energy of a typical air dryer system.

“All in all it is a great win -win system for the plant” said Bill Casey. “We get better air quality for the machines, at a lower cost, with no emissions and an overall reduction of our environmental impact”.

Casey Printing placed it’s order for a new energy efficient air compression system. Working with PG&E consultants and a private contractor, an energy audit was performed on the electrical consumption and efficiency of Casey’s current air compressors. Once the audit was completed, a plan was developed to improve the efficiency of the system, which includes a new variable drive screw type compressor, new filtration systems and a new air dryer.

Once installed, the system will save about 80,000 Kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which is enough power to run more than 12 homes, based upon PG&E typical residential home usage data.

“Now this is what I call green” said plant manager Bill Casey. This kind of reduction in electricity usage is measurable, saves costs, and has positive environmental impacts. A real win-win situation”.

The “Warm Up Winter” team at Casey Printing talked the talk and walked the walk as they gathered and distributed 423 items of warm winter clothing to those in need this Christmas season.

Concerned about the economic slowdown and rising unemployment, the Casey team scoured their own closets, as well as approaching neighbors, friends and relatives, to gather warm winter clothing, especially coats and sweaters, that were brought to the Casey Printing warehouse. As word spread, other local groups got involved, like the 4H, and numerous local companies, and brought warm garments to the Casey Printing plant for storage.

“The response from the employees, and other members of the community, was terrific,” said Romona Bender, Casey customer service rep and organizer of the project. “Once the word got out that we were looking for warm winter clothing, it caught on like wild fire and the coats and sweaters just started rolling in,” she exclaimed.

Once gathered, Casey Printing employees made arrangements to deliver some of the children’s sizes of the warm winter clothing to local schools, where teachers and administrators distributed them to the appropriate students. More of the children’s garments went to the Southern Monterey County Rural Fire Dept’s children’s outreach program. The balance of the children’s sizes, and the all the adult sizes, went to the Salvation Army’s rural outreach program, Loaves and Fishes (the King City food bank program) Victory Outreach in Soledad and the King City Police Dept.

“Its tough out there for many people right now, and we are extremely grateful for everyone’s support of this project” commented Casey co-owner, Richard Casey. “The donations from employees, and all the other organizations, companies and individuals was heartwarming, especially in this time of extreme need. We even had people going out and purchasing brand new clothing items for donation.”

With such an enthusiastic response this year, the Casey team plans to tackle the project again in 2009. “We will be ready to do it again next Christmas season” said Casey customer service rep Erinn Pozzi. “Keep us in mind this coming year and hang on to those coats and sweaters until next December,” she added.

Recently, Casey Printing needed to perform major maintenance to one of it’s printing presses. Part of that maintenance work includes a complete and thorough cleaning.

Anybody who has been around printing knows that a printing press can get pretty dirty deep down inside and that in order to consistently provide a high quality product, even the deepest, darkest recesses of the press must be cleaned.

Traditionally, this job would require gallons of harsh cleaning solvents, rags and lots of plain old elbow grease, but Casey chooses to use a different, less toxic, more environmentally friendly approach - Dry Ice blasting. This technology uses rice sized pellets of frozen CO2 (carbon dioxide or “Dry Ice”), shot at high velocity from a nozzle directed at the gunk to be cleaned out. The Dry Ice pellets blast away the gunk, which freezes and falls to the floor. The harmless Dry Ice sublimates into the air.

According to Casey Printing Plant Engineer, Fidenco Diaz, the clean up job went well, and did not require the use of solvents, or other chemicals, to get the press sparkling clean.

This month Casey Printing became the first business in South Monterey County to receive the Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program certification. The M.B.A Green Business Program is a partnership of environmental agencies, professional associates, waste management agencies and a concerned public working together to recognize and assist businesses that operate in an environmentally friendly manner. To be certified “green,” participants must be in compliance with all set regulations and meet program standards for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste.

Casey Printing has long been committed to Green Business and environmental stewardship. Recently, Casey Printing was recognized by PG&E for its conservation efforts. Last winter, Casey Printing used 27% less natural gas on average than in winters past. In addition to the expected cost savings, Casey Printing also received a 10% invoice credit.

Other long-standing “green programs” include a facility-wide recycling program, utilization of more environmentally friendly materials such as recycled paper and soy-based inks, and a Press Operators waste incentive program. Under this program, press operators are granted monetary rewards for reducing waste during production runs.

As another part of Casey Printing’s ongoing commitment to engage in more environmentally friendly business practices, a new HVAC system has been installed that will allow for more automation and much more efficient energy consumption.
The new system is set to take advantage of the cool early morning air and chills the building to the low 70’s. The AC does this by running in “economizer” mode and drawing in cool air from outside rather than running compressors. Later, as the day warms up and energy demand (and power company rates) goes up, the set points go up to the mid 70’s on order to reduce energy consumption.

The plant has also been divided into many zones. Each zone has it’s own schedule for heating, cooling and fan ventilation. The system is set to run in un-occupied mode after hours, weekends and holidays. During these times, cooling set points are raised to the mid 80’s and heating is set in the mid 50’s.

Each thermostat can be overridden locally. For example, if someone needs to work on a Saturday and the office is too hot, the employee can simply cool the zone they are working in. The new setting will last two hours before reverting to the programmed setting.

“I expect the new controls will help us save a dramatic amount of energy while doing a better job of maintaining comfortable temperatures,” says Bill Casey, Plant Manager.
Greener business practices offer benefits for all parties concerned. Most importantly, they offer a way for business to work in a conservative and environmentally responsible manner in order to provide for a better, cleaner future for everyone. Green Business practices also allow business, such as Casey Printing, to operate in a more efficient manner, reducing costs. These savings can then be passed on to the customer in the form of more competitive pricing.
